The 32nd Annual Conference of the American Water Works Association - Hawaii Section opened at the Renaissance Ilikai Waikiki Hotel on Wednesday, May 10, 2006. The conference was called to order by Dawn Barsana, Conference Chair. Hawaii Section Chair Walt Hager welcomed all attendees. Nilaksh Kothari, Vice-President of the American Water Works Association, opened the technical sessions with a talk on how the potable water industry is important to society, essentially by providing tap water on a 24 hours/day, 7 days a week basis. The second speaker was Ramsay Taum of Sustain Hawaii, who spoke of the connection of Hawaii’s past to Hawaii’s future, through the meaning of Hawaiian language.

Once again, Rodney Villanueva served as master of ceremonies for the 22nd "Ono" Water Contest. Water this year came from private and public water systems. Celebrity judges included Nilaksh Kothari, AWWA Vice-President; Betty Shimabukuro, Honolulu Star-Bulletin writer; Lyle Fujioka, local wine purveyor; Roberto Viernes, Master Sommelier and wine educator; and Mike Victorino, Maui Department of Water Supply.
