Highlights of May 1st (Th), 2008
Ono Water Contest, Awards Luncheon
Pacific Beach Hotel, Waikiki

The second day of the 34th Annual Conference started with a presentation by Paula MacIlwaine, Deputy Executive Director of the American Water Works Association, who gave the audience an overview of the state of AWWA.

Mark "Pono" Fujimoto of the Honolulu Board of Water Supply served as master of ceremonies for the 24th Annual "Ono" Water Contest. The category for this year's entrants was Resorts and Large Developments, and included entrants from Hawaiian Shores, Kaupulehu, Kapalua, Kaanapaili, Princeville, Gay and Robinson, and Lanai Water Company. Celebrity judges included AWWA Deputy Executive Director Paula MacIlwaine, AWWA Vice-President Craig Woolard, Honolulu Board of Water Supply Manager & Chief Engineer Cliff Lum, KITV Morning News Reporter Mahealani Richardson and KITV Morning News Anchor Dan Meisenzahl. The "ono" water was judged on three criteria: taste (pleasing/ refreshing), appearance (clarity), and odor (lack of). A listing of all past Ono Water Contest Winners can be viewed here.

Congratulations to the Lanai Water Company, who took 1st place. Lanai Water Company (LWC) is regulated by the Public Utilities Commision (PUC) and serves over 3,000 residents and guests of the Island of Lanai . LWC provides potable water to two Four Seasons Resorts, Manele Bay and the Lodge at Koele. In addition, LWC runs two R-1 Plants and a brackish water system to irrigate two golf courses and landscape areas in Manele. Lanai does not have perennial streams, so most of its water comes from wells that puncture a high level aquifer. LWC delivered 2.2 million gallons per day (MGD) last year from four potable and three brackish water wells. LWC is a subsidiary of Castle and Cooke Resorts.

During the awards luncheon, three AWWA Hawaii Section Scholarships were awarded. The recipients were Sara Matasci, daughter of Brown and Caldwell Vice President Ray Matasci, Jenny Nakano, daughter of Honolulu Board of Water Supply Deputy Manager Dean Nakano, and Ross Pascual, son of Honolulu Board of Water Supply Inspector Dionicio Pascual, Jr. Outstanding Section Member Awards went to Roy Silva, AWWA Hawaii Section Conference Trustee and Chair, and Eric Yamashige, AWWA Hawaii Section Water Utility Trustee, for their invaluable contributions to the organization. Special Recognition Awards were presented to Lauren Arizumi, Lyuba Puzakova, and Timothy Lum Yee, AWWA Hawaii Section Young Professionals Co-Chairs, for their enthusiastic efforts in getting younger members to participate in association events.
