2011 GEORGE WARREN FULLER AWARDEE
George Warren Fuller Awards are presented annually by the American Water Works Association to the sections’ respective selected members for their distinguished service to the water supply field in commemoration of the sound engineering skill . . . the brilliant diplomatic talent . . . and the constructive leadership which characterized the life of George Warren Fuller.
George Warren Fuller was first of all a capable engineer, equipped with a mind that never closed a channel to new ideas. He was an inventive technician - first in the laboratory, later in engineering and design. He was a skilled negotiator, a public relations counsel who never called himself one, but who by such skill persuaded reluctant city officials that they were very wise to authorize sanitary improvements. He was a loyal citizen who found himself able and willing to render service to his country during World War I. He was uncannily able to give ear to the ideas and aspirations of younger men in the field and to inspire in them the spirit of leadership that he possessed. He believed in the organization of technical and professional men and devoted himself fully to the advancement of their associations and societies.
This years winner recipient is Woodie Muirhead, who has been an outstanding asset to the AWWA Hawaii Section
and a role model for our junior members. Woodie joined AWWA in 2001 and immediately stepped forward to take a
leadership role in our organization with a special focus on education. Woodie has held numerous leadership roles within the section. Most notably he was
Hawaii Section Chair in 2008-2009 and the Conference Chair for our annual
conference from 2001-2003.
As a respected member of the Hawaii water engineering community he has
participated in addressing some of the most imperative water issues facing our
communities. Woodie's place in the Hawaii water industry is both prominent
and distinguished. Woodie received the AWWA-Hawaii Section Outstanding
Section Member award in 2003. He also received the Distinguished Achievement
Award and the Arthur Sidney Bedell Award from the Pacific Northwest
Pollution Control Association.
Woodie attended the University of Alabama at Huntsville and received his
Bachelor of Science degree in Biology in 1974. Woodie began his employment
career with the City of Medford, Oregon in 1981 where he worked until 1986
when he went to work for the City of Corvallis, Oregon. During this period, Woodie received his Masters degree in Business Administration in 1988 from
Southern Oregon State College. In 1988 he joined the firm of Brown and
Caldwell where he is currently employed today as Vice President / Operations
Specialist.
