37th Annual AWWA Hawaii Conference and Exposition
The Hawaii Section of the American Water Works Association is proud to announce that the 37th Annual Conference will be held from May 2nd thru May 5th, 2011 at the Hawaii Convention Center. This year's theme is "Ua Ka Ua, Kahe Ka Wai - Let the Rains Fall, let the Waters Flow". With the amount of rainfall this past winter and the impact of drought in many parts of the State, the theme shows the interaction of water in our everyday life. Pre-Conference Chair Trevor Inouye has two great workshops to attend on May 2nd. The first will focus on water distribution systems and the need for repair and maintenance as well as tools for predicting potential maintenance issues. This workshop is geared for water system operators as well as those that work in field operations. The second pre-conference workshop has a sustainabllity theme in the morning that covers conservation topics and energy savings that fits well into today's eeo-conscious society. Learn about the "green" business market, water conservation techniques, and small and large ecosystems. The afternoon session will be an interactive session on planning and problem solving. The Conference officially opens on Tuesday, May 3rd with exhibitors' showing the newest and latest products starting at 8 am. Section Chair Audrey Yokota will provide opening remarks followed by AWWA President Joseph Mantua who will provide updates on AWWA. The always wild and exciting Pipe Tapping championship round will start at 10 am. Technical sessions will start Tuesday afternoon covering a variety of topics. You'll hear about how the military buildup in Guam is impacting groundwater sources, or you may want to participate in the open AWWA forum, or learn about trends in equipment monitoring and pipe installation techniques. At the end of the day, the exhibitors will host the "Meet & Greet" in the Exhibit Hall. Go ahead and meet with old friends and make new acquaintances and maybe even win a prize! Our gracious host will be Rich Hopkins, chair of our Exhibits Committee. One of the highlights for Wednesday will be the 5th Annual Top Ops contest featuring the best of the state water system operators. This is always an exciting event that goes down to the wire. At lunch, we will present the annual awards hosted by the Awards Chair Daryl Hiromoto. More technical sessions on Wednesday afternoon will cover topics for small water systems including a round table discussion for Small Water Systems. There will also be sessions covering international water projects that Hawaii engineers have been involved in. We will once again take advantage of the beautiful outdoor concourse at the Hawaii Convention Center to hold our Installation Program and announce our Fuller Awardee. The formal part of the program will start at 4:30 pm followed by an evening of heavy pupus instead of the usual sit-down dinner. Another opportunity to meet with colleagues and friends! As we close out the conference on Thursday, we will have presentations about risk management, Keju Island in Korea, and developing an underground 25 MGD water source. The conference concludes with the 16th annual Water for People golf tournament at Waikele Golf Course, put together by golf tournament chair Jeff Pearson. We look forward to seeing all of you at the Conference! Aloha, C. Michael Street SECTION EVENTS >>
